About Bangor

Bangor is one of the smallest cities in Britain and its origins date back to the founding of a monastic establishment on the site of Bangor Cathedral.  The city houses a popular University which attracts 10,000 students to complement the towns local population of 16,000 + residents.

Based in the North West of Wales historically in Caernarfonshire it was later assigned to Gwynedd.  The origins of the city can be traced back to a monastic establishment on the site of Bangor Cathedral by the Celtic saint Deiniol in the early 6th century AD, althought the Cathedral has been modified over the ages to its present form.

Bangor lies on the North Wales coast close to the Menai Strait, separating it from the island of Anglesey.  The town of Menai Bridge lies just over the strait. Bangor Mountain lies to the east of the city. A large housing estate of Maesgeirchen, is to the east of the mountain near Port Penrhyn.  The shadow from Bangor Mountain during the winter months causes places such as the High Street, Glan Adda and Hirael areas to receive no direct sunlight.
